Applying False Lashes: It’s An Art You Need To Master

If you have never worn falsies before, the task can seem daunting. Will they feel heavy? Fall off? Glue my eyelids together?! With the right lash style and proper application, false lashes can be comfortable and long-lasting for any level of makeup wearer! Follow these three easy steps.

Step One: Lash Prep

You’ll want to prepare your own lashes as well as the false ones for seamless application.

Be sure to have completed all of your eye makeup before putting on the lashes. Shadow primer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara are best done first, so there is less fuss around the lash strip once it has adhered to your eyelid. You can always go in with little touch-ups like liquid liner and dark eyeshadow on a detail brush to help blend or hide the lash band once it’s on.

To remove the falsies from their plastic container, use the pad of your finger to roll them off. Usually, they have a temporary adhesive to hold them in place on the container and keep their shape. To avoid stretching the band and ruining the curve, gently work them off rather than pulling at one end. Once you’ve done that, hold the ends of one band in between your fingers and roll it like a caterpillar so as to make sure it isn’t too stiff. Lastly, lay each lash, sans glue, on top of your own lashes to preview the look and trim from the outside edges if they seem too long. You will usually have to trim them.

Step Two: Glue and Placement

Now that your false lashes and real lashes are prepped, you may commence with the glue and application.

There are a variety of different lash adhesives on the market. The most important thing to consider if whether or not you have a latex allergy. If so, purchase latex free. Aside from that, picking your lash glue is going to be total personal preference! My ride or die is the Duo Brush-On Adhesive with Vitamins mainly because the applicator is a handy brush that makes getting a thin layer of glue so easy! Before I used to squirt it out onto the end of a pair of tweezers and drag those along the lash band, which was effective but sometimes wasteful and messy. Use a decent layer of glue (not too thick) and focus most of it at the very ends of the band since they will want to lift over time. Holding the ready lash with either a pair of tweezers or your fingers, wait for 15 to 30 seconds for most glues to get “tacky”. This means if you were to tap it, it will feel sticky and not wet.

What works best for me is to align the center or the lash with the center of your eye. Since you already measured the length and trimmed them, you should have an idea of how they will lay. Some people find it easier to apply with eyes open and others with eyes closed. I put mine on while looking down into a mirror so that my eye is relaxed and I can still see. Push the band as close to the root of your natural lashes as possible and hold the ends down to ensure that they stick.

Step Three: Blend

While the glue is drying, you may use tweezers (caution – at your own risk), your fingers or a lash applicator tool to “sandwhich” your natural lashes with the falsies. Clamp down in several places to ensure that the lash band is as close as possible to your natural lashes.

Finally, you can pop on one last coat of mascara, wiggling the wand so that you blend your natural lashes with the false ones.

Bonus Step: Removal and Care!

Do not sleep in or shower in your false lashes! They are meant for temporary wear. But that doesn’t mean you have to wear them once and toss ‘em! Be gentle when removing your lashes at the end of the day because you can easily wear them several more times with the proper care. Use a flat cotton round or cotton swab soaked in your favorite eye makeup remover to hold on the eye and break down the makeup and glue. Use downward motions to gently ease the lash strip off of the eye and clean off any residue. I like to store my falsies on the plastic container they came in so as to keep their shape.

MUA Tips: How to Apply False Eyelashes

Applying false eyelashes can be such a b*tch sometimes. The right application can make or break your makeup. With either strip or individual false eyelashes, you can make your eyes look bigger, fuller and more dramatic. But if you don’t know the first thing about applying false eyelashes, take a seat because we’re about to teach you how to get your falsies on the easy way.

First off, you want to identify the shape of your eyes. This is important because the more you know about your eye makeup, the easier it will be to choose falsies that suit you.

Next, it’s time to choose the style or type of lashes that suit you. There are tons to choose from and the right choice depends on both your eye shape and your makeup look. Individual lashes will give you the most natural look. They take longer to apply, so we wouldn’t recommend them for beginners. Full strip lashes will give you the greatest range of wear and are the most common. They’re the easiest to use, but do not look as natural as their individual counterparts. Demi strip lashes, also called “half size” lashes are mostly applied on the outer half of your lash line. You can cut full strip lashes to create demi lashes.

Once you’ve chosen the type of eyelashes you’ll be using, you’re going to need eyelash adhesive. We recommend beginners use a lash glue that starts out white then dries transparent. Darker lash glues tend to mess with your eye makeup if you don’t get it right. DUO Eyelash Adhesive in Clear is the most favorite among reviewers and is also budget friendly.

Now that you know the basics and they’re importance, let’s get right into how to apply false eyelashes.

Step 1. Before you remove the lashes from their box, apply a matte black eyeshadow on the strip to make it seamless and more natural looking. Then when you take it off, always peel from the outer edge–always!

Step 2. Measure the lashes by resting it on your lash line to see if it needs to be trimmed. If so, trim the outside edge. Don’t cut through the lashes, always cut it at the “vein”. To prevent lashes from popping off, curl them around your finger or on a spoolie. This will help the lashes regain their curves since being in a box can sometimes flatten them out.

Step 3. Apply the right amount of lash glue–not too thin, but not too thick either. Run the tip of your glue on the strip and apply more glue on the inner and outer edges to secure it. Wait for the glue to get tacky before you apply it to your lash line. Avoid blowing on the glue for hygienic reasons.

Step 4. Look down, past your nose when you put on the lashes. This will give you a better view of your lash line and ensure your application is as smooth as can be. I like to place the lashes on the center first then fix the inner and outer corners above the natural lash line to cheat some lift and have the illusion of bigger eyes.

Step 5. You can apply a black gel or liquid liner on the strip to ensure no bits of glue or false eyelash show. Apply a second coat of mascara to bring your natural lashes and false ones together. You can also use an eyelash curler to prevent them from drooping.

Kim Kardashian’s Sexy Smokey Eye Makeup Tutorial

Kim Kardashian shone bright this year on the Cannes red carpet. She wore a nude, bedazzled body stocking, a sleek ponytail, and, as per yoosh, on-point makeup. The fierce smokey eye, done by none other than Mario Dedivanovic, was the focal point of her look. He made Kim’s contour hard enough to cut through the haters, upped the ante on bold brows, and added some edge by drawing heavily lined eyes with faded wings.

Luckily, our favorite YouTuber, Nikkietutorials, is talented enough to show us how to recreate Kimmie’s sexy smokey eye. Ready to look like a Kardashian?

Step 1. Prime the lids

Use an eyeshadow primer all over the lids to wear this look all night long. In this tutorial, Nikkie uses MAC Paint Pot in Soft Ochre and applies it with Sigma 3DHD Precision Brush.

Step 2. Set the Primer

Whenever you apply anything that’s cream-based, you have to set it with powder to keep it from transferring and/or creasing. Set your primer with a matte skin tone shade of powder.

Step 3. Your Transition Color

Use a light shade of eyeshadow for your transition color. This will also help to define your crease area. For this, Nikkie uses Coloured Raine Eyeshadow in Ginger Bread and applies it with a Morphe M504 Brush.

Step 4. Adding Colors to the Lids

First, apply a glitter adhesive such as the Violet Voss Glitter Adhesive as your base and then go over it with your choice of light shimmery or metallic gold eyeshadow. Remember to pat, not drag, the color onto the lids. One option for eyeshadow is the Coloured Raine Eyeshadow in Champagne Life.

Step 5. Defining the Outer Corners

Use a dark brown eyeshadow to define the outer corners of your eyes. Don’t forget to slightly wing the color out.

To add more definition to the crease, use a tiny bit of black eyeshadow. Apply it on the outer corner of your eyes and softly brush it outwards.

Step 6. Smoking Lash Line

Using the same black eyeshadow (Coloured Raine Eyeshadow in Black Moon), define the inner part of your lower lash line with a pencil brush. Drag the brush and color across the lower lash line to the outer corner of the eye.

Step 7. Highlighting

Apply a shimmery white eyeshadow, like Coloured Raine in Clutch Pearl,  to highlight the tear ducts and brow bone.

Step 8. Waterline

Use a black eyeliner pencil to darken the water line.

Step 9. False Lashes

Apply your falsies (optional).

But, as we all know, not every makeup trend on Instagram is wearable in real life. Case in point: electric brows. Contouring

We’re all guilty of having tried this trend as soon as we saw Kim Kardashian out in public with chiseled cheekbones and a killer jawline. Needing hardly anything but the right bronzer, this technique is the #pro way to make your face look slimmer. To contour, you can use either cream or powder formula to draw line or dots on your face (cheekbones, perimeter of the face, bridge of your nose) and blend it all using a beauty blender or buffing brush. Say hello to a chiseled AF facial structure.

Baking

You can thank the drag queen community for this! Baking is when you use a translucent powder to set heavy concealer on the under eye area and “cut” the contour. It’s also called “cooking,” but that sounds like we’re on a cooking show and my empty stomach can’t handle that right now. This technique requires that you use a copious amount of setting powder,like the RCMA – No Color Powder, and apply it on your skin with a damp beauty blender. Let it sit for several minutes and if your face begins to feel like cement’s hardening on it, you’re doing it right! Then use a powder brush to clean off the excess and blend.

Strobing

A new name for an old technique. This trend has the same objective as contouring, except that instead of creating shadows, you’re drawing light on the high points of your face, especially the cheekbones. Swipe highlighter stick, powder, of your favorite formula onto your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, and cupid’s bow to get that glow. Just not too much because you don’t want to look like a walking disco ball, do you?

This is another trend that can be credited to the drag queen community. Also known as “HD Brow” or “The Fade,” this trend isn’t your average brow routine. It’s bold, well-defined, and for those outside of the makeup community, a bit harsh, but a beauty girl’s gotta do what a beauty girl’s gotta do so we love this trend all the same. To do halo eyes, apply a dark shade of eyeshadow onto the outer and inner part of your eyes; connect the shadow to the crease using a blending brush (making sure to avoid the center part of the lid); then, take a shimmery or metallic eyeshadow and tap it on the center of your lids.
