Learning how to apply foundation is one of the first skills every cosmetic enthusiast should master. A smooth even base is the key to long-lasting makeup whether you’re going for an everyday look or full glam. From formula picks to blending techniques, this guide breaks down the steps so you can achieve a flawless finish every time.

How to Apply Foundation: Step-by-Step for a Flawless Finish

Skip a step, and the products won’t sit right. Let’s break down the steps on how to apply foundation to avoid patchy surprises and cakey regrets.

Step 1: Prep Your Skin

Foundation looks best on hydrated skin. Always start with a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. If you have oily skin, opt for a mattifying primer to control shine. If your face tends to get dry, use a hydrating primer.

Step 2: Choose the Right Formula

What may work for other complexions may not work for you. Pick a formula that matches your skin type.

  • For dry skin: hydrating or dewy formulas prevent the skin from looking flaky.
  • For oily skin: matte or oil-free options help absorb excess oil.
  • For combination: a natural or satin finish controls shine without drying out the cheeks.

Step 3: Pick a Tool

Each tool produces a different finish, so choose one based on your desired look and what feels most comfortable to use.

  • Brush: gives more coverage and delivers a professional-looking finish.
  • Sponge: blends seamlessly for a soft skin-like finish.
  • Fingers: produce warmth that helps melt products quickly.

💡 Pro tip: Dampen your sponge before use so it absorbs less makeup, which helps avoid streaks.

Step 4: Apply in the Right Order

A foundation routine consists of several products that work together to make your makeup last. Here’s the proper order of application:

  1. Primer (to prep and smooth): Apply a thin layer after skincare and focus on T-zone areas where makeup tends to fade. Let it set before moving on.
  2. Foundation (to even out tone): Dot the product on the forehead, cheeks, and chin. Blend outward toward the hairline and jawline for the most natural finish.
  3. Concealer (to brighten or spot-correct): Pat the product under eyes, around the nose, or over blemishes then blend well.
  4. Setting powder or spray (to lock it all in place): Dust powder on oily zones or mist setting spray over the face for lasting wear.

Step 5: Blend, Set, and Perfect

The final step is to refine and lock in the products. Blend foundation and concealer to avoid visible lines along the jawline, hairline, or undereyes. Then, lightly set your makeup with powder in oily areas or mist a setting spray for a lasting finish. A quick tap with a sponge around the nose or eyes can smooth any creases and leave your skin looking poreless and natural.

The Beauty Breakdown

The thing is, nobody perfects applying foundation on the first try. But once you figure out how to apply it properly, all layers will look satisfyingly crease-free. So are you ready to level up? Check out our guides on how to apply makeup and discover the best makeup products.

FAQs

1. Does foundation include primer, concealer, and setting spray?
No, foundation is the base makeup that evens out your skin tone. Primer goes before, concealer after, and setting products lock it all in.

2. Should I use foundation or concealer first?
Always apply foundation first to even out skin tone, then follow with concealer for targeted coverage.

3. How do I stop foundation from looking cakey?
Less is more. Use thin layers, blend well, and set only where you need to.

7 Awesome Homemade Makeup Products https://makeuptutorials.com/7-awesome-homemade-makeup-products-2/ https://makeuptutorials.com/7-awesome-homemade-makeup-products-2/#respond Wed, 03 Sep 2025 11:12:12 +0000 https://makeuptutorials.com/?p=70045 When done right, homemade makeup can be your ultimate budget hack. Instead of paying for products that don’t match your shade or live up to the hype, you can create versions at home using common kitchen ingredients.

With DIY beauty, you get to decide what goes into your makeup. Want a softer blush shade? Adjust the beetroot powder. Need a lip balm that feels nourishing? Add more coconut oil. In this roundup, you’ll find seven homemade makeup recipes ranging from a nourishing lip scrub to a cooling setting spray. They’re the easy way to test new looks without having to commit to any store-bought product.

Easy Homemade Makeup Products You Can Try Today

Store-bought makeup doesn’t consistently deliver. Often, available shades don’t match your undertone while certain formulas can weigh the skin down. Creating your own makeup allows you to determine the product’s composition, and the list below outlines seven easy ways to get started.

1. DIY Tinted Lip Balm

A DIY tinted balm gives lips a natural rosy color and keeps them hydrated. The beetroot powder produces the tint while the coconut oil base locks in moisture for a smooth texture.

You’ll need: Beeswax, coconut oil, beetroot powder, small tin.
Instructions: Melt 1 tablespoon of beeswax with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in a double boiler. Stir in ½ teaspoon of beetroot powder for the pigment. Pour into a clean tin and let it cool until the balm turns solid.

For more lip care ideas, check out our DIY skin care recipes with a peppermint balm you can try at home.

2. Natural Blush Powder

Natural blush powder gives you a soft flush without the synthetic dyes. It won’t grip like cream blush, but it’s a great backup if you want to skip a trip to the store.

You’ll need: Arrowroot powder, cinnamon, beetroot powder, small jar.
Instructions: Mix 2 teaspoons of arrowroot powder with ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon and ¼ teaspoon of beetroot powder. Store the mixture in a small jar.

3. DIY Eyeliner with Cocoa Powder

DIY eyeliner made with cocoa powder is gentle on sensitive eyes, which makes it perfect for a soft everyday look. It creates a smooth line that’s easy to blend or smudge.

You’ll need: Activated charcoal or cocoa powder, coconut oil, airtight jar, angled brush.
Instructions: Combine 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal or cocoa powder for brown with ½ teaspoon of coconut oil. Store in an airtight jar and apply using a liner brush.

4. Kitchen-Ingredient Mascara

Kitchen-ingredient mascara gives off a subtle tint and doubles as a lash conditioner. You won’t get waterproof action, but you’ll get nourished and well-defined lashes.

You’ll need: Aloe vera gel, coconut oil, activated charcoal, clean mascara tube.
Instructions: Blend 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel, ½ teaspoon coconut oil, and ½ teaspoon activated charcoal and funnel the mixture into a clean mascara tube. Next, store in the fridge, use as needed, and discard any leftovers after two weeks.

5. DIY Lip Scrub

A DIY lip scrub is a quick fix for chapped lips. The sugar buffs away flakes while honey and oil leave your lips pillowy-soft. It’s basically a budget dupe for those luxe exfoliators.

You’ll need: Brown sugar, honey, coconut oil, spoon, small jar.
Instructions: Mix 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 1 teaspoon honey, and ½ teaspoon coconut oil. Massage onto lips for 30 seconds, then rinse with warm water.

6. Homemade Highlighter

This DIY homemade highlighter adds a natural dewy shimmer that mimics the appearance of healthy skin. It’s best for days when you want a fresh glow without the sparkle.

You’ll need: Arrowroot powder, mica powder or pearl pigment, small jar.
Instructions: Mix 1 teaspoon arrowroot powder with ½ teaspoon mica powder or pearl pigment, blend well, and store in a small jar. For application, sweep the highlighter using your fingers for a natural finish.

7. DIY Setting Spray

A DIY setting spray can rival commercial versions in terms of hydrating the skin and locking in makeup. Light and soothing, it’s the perfect finishing touch to your beauty routine.

You’ll need: Green tea, aloe vera juice, witch hazel, spray bottle.
Instructions: Brew 1 cup green tea, let cool, then mix 2 tablespoons tea with 1 tablespoon aloe vera juice and 1 teaspoon witch hazel. Pour into a spray bottle, shake before use, and refrigerate.

Wrapping Up

These seven homemade makeup recipes remind us that cosmetics don’t always have to come from a store shelf. When you make it yourself, you’re not only saving money but also creating products that fit your exact specifcations. Having that sense of control feels good especially when so much of the beauty world feels one-size-fits-all.

If you could design your ideal DIY formula, what would you do? A blush that matches your skin tone or a balm that never dries? Share your thoughts, and let’s keep building a beauty routine that caters to your needs.

FAQs

1. Are homemade makeup recipes safe for all skin types?
Most are gentle, but natural doesn’t mean risk-free. Always patch test first and store recipes in clean containers.

2. How long do homemade makeup products last?
Since they’re preservative-free, most last one to two weeks in the fridge. Discard if the smell or texture changes.

3. Can DIY makeup replace store-bought products?
For basics like lip balm or blush, yes. But for long-wear or waterproof looks, commercial formulas still perform better.

Get This Celebrity Hair and Makeup Look- Kendall Jenner https://makeuptutorials.com/get-this-celebrity-hair-and-makeup-look-kendall-jenner/ https://makeuptutorials.com/get-this-celebrity-hair-and-makeup-look-kendall-jenner/#respond Fri, 07 Feb 2025 09:10:09 +0000 https://makeuptutorials.com/?p=47552 Kendall Jenner tends to keep her hair and makeup very simple, but every now and then she switches things up a bit. We love this super long ponytail and dark eye shadow that she wore to the Met Gala and today we’ll show you how to recreate this look.

Recreate Kendall Jenner’s hair and makeup

Makeup

Prime and moisturize your face to ensure flawless makeup application and smooth skin. After applying your foundation apply a dark shadow on the top corners of the eyelids and add a dark shade of blue in the middle. Bring the dark blue eye shadow beneath the bottom lashes as well. To complete the look add a thin layer of liquid liner on the top lids, then add your lashes.

Add a very light pink blush on the cheeks and a pink liquid gloss on the lips, then spray your entire face with a finishing spray.

Recreate the ponytail

You need freshly washed hair for this sleek middle part style. If you don’t have naturally straight hair spray some heat protectant on your locs and use a flat iron to straighten your hair first.

Then add a little hair pomade and use a tail comb to part your hair down the middle. Then, bring your hair down to the nape of your neck and secure with a scrunchie. Spray a little hair spray in the middle of your hand and smooth down any flyaways.

More hair and beauty looks you might have missed.

5-Minute Makeup Routine: Fast and Flawless in Just a Few Steps https://makeuptutorials.com/5-minute-makeup-routine-fast-flawless/ https://makeuptutorials.com/5-minute-makeup-routine-fast-flawless/#respond Fri, 20 Sep 2024 11:48:00 +0000 https://makeuptutorials.com/?p=65758 Being a mom is incredibly fulfilling, but it’s a 24/7 commitment that makes finding time for oneself a challenge. Between juggling family duties, errands, and work, applying makeup can often feel the least of your priorities. But what if you could refresh your look in just five minutes? Thanks to this 5-minute makeup routine, you can still achieve a glowing appearance despite your busy schedule!

5-Minute Makeup Routine: Fast and Flawless in Just a Few Steps

Achieve a Fresh Look with This 5-Minute Makeup Routine

This 5-minute makeup routine uses multi-tasking products that let you achieve a professional look in less time. Let’s explore how you can achieve a glowing countenance with  just a few quick steps.

Step 1: Clean and Moisturize (1 Minute)

A flawless makeup requires you to start with clean, hydrated skin. Wash your face using a gentle cleanser, then apply a moisturizer suited for your skin type. If possible, pick a product that contains SPF to protect your skin from sun damage.

A lightweight tinted moisturizer or BB cream is an excellent option. It combines hydration, light coverage, and sun protection. This step brightens your complexion without weighing it down. In just a minute, you can get a more even skin tone and fresh makeup base.

Step 2: Conceal Imperfections (1 Minute)

Grab your concealer to target dark circles, blemishes, and redness around the nose. Dab a little under your eyes, blend it with your ring finger, and do the same for other spots that need coverage. Focus on areas that make you appear tired so you can instantly revive your look.

You don’t need to apply a thick layer. A creamy, blendable concealer already does wonders to conceal imperfections and enhances your natural skin while maintaining a smooth finish.

Step 3: Bring Color to Your Cheeks (1 Minute)

A touch of blush can completely transform a tired face by adding warmth and dimension. Cream blushes work wonders for a speedy application. For a natural-looking glow, tap a small amount onto the apples of your cheeks, then blend it upward toward your temples.

For even more convenience, choose a product that doubles as a lip tint. This way, you can create a cohesive and soft look. It also allows you to drasticallycut down on the number of products you need to grab in the morning. Within a minute, your skin achieves a glowy flush that lasts throughout the day.

Step 4: Define Your Eyes with Mascara (1 Minute)

Your eyes are a focal point of your face, so a little mascara can go a long way.If you’re short on time, skip the usual eyeliner and eyeshadow and focus on your lashes instead. Use an eyelash curler to lift your lashes, then apply one or two coats of volumizing mascara.

When applying mascara to your lashes, start at the base then wiggle the brush upward. This creates maximum lift and separation without clumping.  So even if you didn’t sleep much, you can still look fresh and awake.

Step 5: Quick Lip Color (1 Minute)

A little lip color can pull your entire look together in seconds. Choose a product that adds color and moisture at the same time such as a tinted lip balm or sheer lipstick. Perfect for everyday wear, these options hydrate your lips and give them a subtle color.

If you want to add a bit of definition, line your lips with a lip pencil that matches your natural lip tone, then apply the balm or lipstick on top. This makes a big difference and gives you a luminous finish in no time.

Step 6: Set and Go (30 Seconds)

Set your look with a quick spritz of setting spray or a light dusting of translucent powder. This helps lock in your makeup, especially if you’re running around or dealing with the elements. It also prevents your makeup from creasing or fading by midday.

If you don’t have time for a setting spray or powder, don’t worry—just toss your lipstick and concealer in your bag for any quick touch-ups on the go!

Additional Tips to Save Time

These simple tips will make your 5-minute makeup routine even quicker and easier so you can look great without the stress.

  • Use Multi-Purpose Products: A BB cream with SPF, a lip-and-cheek tint, and a dual-function concealer can simplify your routine.
  • Organize Your Essentials: Keep your go-to products in one makeup bag so everything’s easy to find.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: As you get more familiar with this routine, you’ll get faster. You might even trim your time down to four minutes!

Your Glow-Up Is Just Moments Away

This 5-minute makeup routine can help you achieve a fresh look without sacrificing valuable time. Let Us Spray: A Guide to Always Smelling Exquisite https://makeuptutorials.com/let-us-spray-a-guide-to-always-smelling-exquisite/ https://makeuptutorials.com/let-us-spray-a-guide-to-always-smelling-exquisite/#respond Mon, 02 Sep 2024 07:40:38 +0000 https://makeuptutorials.com/?p=52342 They say that first impression lasts, and this has been our lifetime mantra. Wanting to create the best impact to others, to be accepted and appreciated is always part of our human nature, that is why we always strive to look our best every single day of our lives.

Looking back on our history, our ancestors see the essentiality of perfumes for various reasons: to honor a love, attracting a desired opposite sex and as a way to make you stand out from the others in the society. Meanwhile, biology explains the connection of wanting the best aroma in the pheromones, a chemical that triggers social behavior.

Fast forward to the present, perfume creators continue to produce and develop various fragrances that will unleash the best assets of its users. Still, we always want to become the best by smelling the best as well. So, how can we achieve that desire? Here are some of the ways to make you smell the best all throughout the day:

  1. Avoid putting and storing your perfumes in damp places if you want them to last longer.

Who does not want a perfume that can last for as long as you want? If you do, never put them in places like bathroom or other closed areas. Heat and humidity affect the perfume because it can break down its components which can bring bad effect on the perfume’s quality. Instead, you can store them in cooler and drier areas like the vanity, or any area away from the windows.

  1. Have some petroleum jelly on your pulse points before splitzing your favorite perfume

Petroleum jelly like Vaseline, being an occlusive, has the capacity to let the perfume to stay especially if you have a dry skin.

  1. in the case of the absence of petroleum jelly, put some unscented lotion before spraying the perfume

Another thing you can use to make your perfume last longer if you have a dry skin is to apply unscented lotion first. It will make your skin quite moisty so chances are the scent can stick longer to your skin then.

  1. One of the best times to spray your favorite scent is right after taking a shower, before getting dressed.

The skin’s moisture at this time can make the scent lock into it. Moreover, it can also prevent your clothes and jewelry from getting stained.

  1. Dabbing the wrists after spraying is a sin.

Yes, you read it right. Time to reveal the truth, because dabbing after spraying will make the perfume’s top notes disappear faster from the usual. Obviously, doing this will definitely not make your favorite scent last longer.

  1. Aim for your target points and other warm areas of your body when splashing your perfume

Here are the warm areas in our body which is ideal to spray your perfume:

  • Wrists
  • Inside of the elbows
  • Neck
  • Below the midrib area
  • Behind the knees
  • Ankles
  • Calves

The mentioned areas aids in diffusing the fragrance across the whole body, especially in the calves and ankles, where it can allow the scent to last the whole day. However, a certain warm area, not all of them, to splitz your perfume.

  1. If you want to achieve a lighter smell, spray the perfume in the air and gradually walk into it

Doing this can dispense evenly to the body, leaving only a certain amount of scent when you prefer to not be smelly.

  1. An alcohol-based perfume will be more effective if you will spray it on your hairbrush and not directly on your hair

Spraying a scent that is alcohol-based on your hair will just dry it out, so do it in the hairbrush instead. Besides, doing this will save your hair from being undamaged.

  1. If you insist on doing so, then choose an alcohol-based perfume that can be sprayed directly to your hair.
  2. Make yourself familiar even with the simple fragrance terminologies so that you can be knowledgeable on what the sales people are referring to you, and for your own benefit as well.
  3. The last drops of your perfume should not be go to waste and it can be done by pouring it out to your unscented lotion.
  4. To avoid bringing the whole perfume bottle if you are in a hurry, spray the perfume on the cotton swabs and put them in sandwich bags inside your bag.

This will definitely save you on your quick retouches.

  1. To achieve an amazing smell in your casual dresses and towels, line your drawers with tissue papers sprayed with your favorite perfume.
  2. Another way for a better smell of your dresses in the cabinets is by putting scented soaps wrapped in a thin layer of tissue paper inside your closet.
  3. if your favorite perfume has some body cream and wash, do not hesitate to use them as well.

Just as how your fashion style reflects your character, so is your perfume. If you are  still on the look for a perfume that can truly define your attitude, you can try Fragrance 365.

The Ultimate Guide to Making Instagram Makeup Trends Wearable https://makeuptutorials.com/instagram-makeup-tutorials/ https://makeuptutorials.com/instagram-makeup-tutorials/#respond Mon, 12 Aug 2024 11:46:22 +0000 https://makeuptutorials.com/?p=30399 What’s old is new again, thanks to Instagram. Here’s the ultimate guide to making those Instagram makeup trends wearable. Maybe not “everyday basis” wearable, but “date night” wearable.

The Ultimate Guide to Making Instagram Makeup Trends Wearable

From contouring your face to contouring your lips–these beauty trends originated on Instagram and became (almost) as famous as Kim Kardashian. But, as we all know, not every makeup trend on Instagram is wearable in real life. Case in point: electric brows. You know, when you color your eyebrows in with bright hues; where and when could you possible wear that?

Today we’re taking the biggest Instagram makeup trends and turning them into everyday wearable looks, so if you want to upgrade your selfie game from #behindthescreen to #reallife, keep scrolling.

Contouring

We’re all guilty of having tried this trend as soon as we saw Kim Kardashian out in public with chiseled cheekbones and a killer jawline. Needing hardly anything but the right bronzer, this technique is the #pro way to make your face look slimmer. To contour, you can use either cream or powder formula to draw line or dots on your face (cheekbones, perimeter of the face, bridge of your nose) and blend it all using a beauty blender or buffing brush. Say hello to a chiseled AF facial structure.

Baking

You can thank the drag queen community for this! Baking is when you use a translucent powder to set heavy concealer on the under eye area and “cut” the contour. It’s also called “cooking,” but that sounds like we’re on a cooking show and my empty stomach can’t handle that right now. This technique requires that you use a copious amount of setting powder, like the RCMA – No Color Powder, and apply it on your skin with a damp beauty blender. Let it sit for several minutes and if your face begins to feel like cement’s hardening on it, you’re doing it right! Then use a powder brush to clean off the excess and blend.

Strobing

A new name for an old technique. This trend has the same objective as contouring, except that instead of creating shadows, you’re drawing light on the high points of your face, especially the cheekbones. Swipe highlighter stick, powder, of your favorite formula onto your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, and cupid’s bow to get that glow. Just not too much because you don’t want to look like a walking disco ball, do you?

Instagram Brows

This is another trend that can be credited to the drag queen community. Also known as “HD Brow” or “The Fade,” this trend isn’t your average brow routine. It’s bold, well-defined, and for those outside of the makeup community, a bit harsh, but a beauty girl’s gotta do what a beauty girl’s gotta do so we love this trend all the same. To achieve the #EyebrowsOnFleek look, use a brow gel or pomade like the famous Anastasia Beverly Hills – Dipbrow Pomade and a slim eyebrow brush, like Anastasia Beverly Hills – Duo Brush in #12.

|

Halo Eyes

Halo Eyes is a popular look with beauty bloggers and editors alike (myself included!). What makes this Instagram trend so popular is its versatility. Regardless of whether you’re going for a natural, no-makeup look or a bold smokey eye, there is no going wrong (or looking bad, for that matter) with halo eyes. To do halo eyes, apply a dark shade of eyeshadow onto the outer and inner part of your eyes; connect the shadow to the crease using a blending brush (making sure to avoid the center part of the lid); then, take a shimmery or metallic eyeshadow and tap it on the center of your lids.

|

Dramatic Lashes

Not wearing long, fluffy lashes is like not icing a cake–boring! It’s a good thing Huda Beauty Lashes and Lilly Lashes have the power to take your eyelashes from basic to bombshell. Carefully put the falsies as close to the lash line as possible with a good eyelash glue to add drama to your eye look.

|

Over-Lined Lips

Thanks to Kylie (who later admitted to having lip fillers), everyone and their mother wants fuller-looking lips. If you’re blessed with naturally pouty lips, you won’t have to experience the struggling of over-lining, but if your lips aren’t naturally pouty, look for a lip contour pencil and read this walk-through on how to achieve fuller lips.

|

Ombre/Lip Contouring

Ombre lips have been reincarnated this year thanks, in part, to lip contouring. This technique requires a lot of products and precision that, if done correctly, can give your lips dimension. Ombre lips can be done by using a dark shade of lip color of the outer part of your lips, then a lighter shade on the center.

Click here for a step-by-step guide on how to make your own ombre glitter lip gloss.
